  • Dogmatic principles of moral theology: moral law, virtue, sin, the Church, with an emphasis on understanding spiritual warfare and progress.

    Reading: The Philokalia, volumes I and II.

  • New Testament – Introduction to the Gospels, Acts, Epistles, and Revelation. Chronological study of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ as related by the four Evangelists and of the Apostolic period as related by the Acts; explanation of New Testament teaching as fulfillment of Old Testament.

    Reading: The New Testament, Selections from the Commentaries of St. John Chrysostom and St. Cyril of Alexandria as well the homilies of St. Leo the Great and St. Gregory the Theologian.

  • The student will read homilies of the Holy Fathers, analyze them, and use them as models for writing his own homilies. Ancient Fathers whose homilies will be studied will include St. Gregory the Theologian and St. Leo the Great. Recent Orthodox preachers, such as Bishop Nikolai Velimirovic, will also be studied.

  • Survey covering the first century AD to the end of the Seventh Ecum. Council. Christian Church under Roman persecutions. The Seven Ecumenical Councils.

    Reading: Eusebius, Sozomen, Evagrius, The Seven Ecumenical Councils volume from the Nicene Fathers, and modern works.
